Sarah and I have been to a bunch of foreign countries together; Italy, Croatia, and Iceland… come to think of it we seem to favor countries that start with I. Anyhow, on the morning of the 16th Sarah and I went our separate ways for the first time ever which I think worried me more than it worried her. I went golfing with John and Jacob Plata (see previous post if you’re lost) and Sarah rented a bike and did some sight seeing.

Golf: Dooks Golf Club

The Dooks Golf Club is the second oldest golf course in Ireland, which is says a lot. It’s a remarkably beautiful course on the water. It doesn’t photograph well, at least not with an iPhone, so temper your expectations. For the golfers out there… this course was a challenge. Small, hard, crowned and undulating greens. Blind shots aplenty, deep deep very soggy rough. And of course, rental clubs and scant yardage markers. This of course is all chatter to defend the 98 I shot 😬 In all truthfulness, sometimes you play to score. When you travel, you play to take in the experience which we did. It rained a little in the beginning, but warmed and brightened up pretty quickly.

The 18th fairway climbed steadily up before taking off hard downhill, which is to say it was a dangerously blind shot. The photo of John in the crows nest shows him making sure we weren’t going to kill any golfers still in the fairway, which to be frank is probably the safest place for them to stand with us on the tee box anyway.

Meanwhile… on Her Bike

Sarah took a bike ride through Killarney National Park and visited the Muckross House, Torc Waterfall, and Muckross Abbey. I’m not sure which of these photos are from which, aside from the waterfall. I’m told the row of bells were part of a row of more than 30 running through the servants’ quarters and were used to beckon them (the servants, not the bells). Today we call it DoorDash.

I wish I had gotten a picture of Sarah in her bike helmet but alas you’ll have to use your imagination 🤓

And with Killarney behind us, we set off for Dingle – the absolute centerpiece to this trip.
