The Roman Forum was the birthplace of Rome. In its day it housed government buildings, lively market squares, temples, a house of women condemned to virginity until the age of 30 lest they be buried alive (true story) and the place where Caesar’s body was burned. Also a Chipotle. Side note, Sarah pointed out that we didn’t see a single Caesar salad while in Rome. That thought you’re having right now, that’s the sound of one hand falling in the woods.

Rife with history as it may be, we were pretty tired, hot and old-crapped out by the time we made it to the Forum. We gave it about a 40-minute saunter, the length of Rick Steeve’s audio tour, and then hightailed it back to the hotel for our customary pre-dinner siesta. Spolier alert, no Caesar salad at that dinner either. Point, Sarah. And also, point Europe, for the whole siesta thing. That country is aggressively chill. Their chief export is the smoke break and their intake of carbs vastly outpaces their need for energy.

Italy, an enigma wrapped in a warm croissant. Delicious.
