We spent the first 2 days in Mammoth, which is a skiing town in the winter and a nice mountain town the rest of the year. The original plan was for the second day to be spent in Yosemite but the fires had something to say about that.
We broke our diet the first night with some BBQ and beer at a festival they happened to be having in town that night. We then spent some time later that evening trying some locally made spirits at Shelter Distillery.
The next morning, instead of heading to Yosemite, we drove up to the main lodge and hiked to Devil’s Postpile and Rainbow Falls which was about a 4 mile hike. You can read more at the link above, but the short of the postpile is it’s a set of 60 foot high hexagonal columns of cooling lava that formed ~100,000 years ago. Rainbow falls is a waterfall – ’nuff said. The hike took us through an area that was devastated by fires around 30 years ago and it’s still recovering. Sarah remarked that it was like hiking through a Christmas tree lot and I’d have to agree.
