We started the morning having breakfast with the other BnB patrons, a risky but delicious broccoli quiche, fresh fruit and triple berry scones was served. As it turns out, we ended up sitting next to a guy Nick Williams used to work with… small world.
We departed by about 9:30 and drove through a LOT of heavy marine fog in Big Sur. We were afraid that we’d miss a lot of the scenery as a result, but there was plenty more to come.
The first stop was to see the elephant seals. Large, lazy, and loud but apparently champions at holding their breath (up to an hour at 4K ft). They also smelled like cows, though that could have been the cows across the street.
After that we stopped off at Limekiln National Park (no, the one out here). We walked down to the coast and then hiked up through a very PA-looking forest to a 100ft waterfall.
After that we hiked near another waterfall that terminated into a beach that was straight out of Hawaii; white sand, turquoise water… the only thing missing was loose roosters. Our last jaunt was a hike to a hidden cove that also had some amazing views and colors.
It’s 5:30 and we’re now checked into a super old hotel in Monterey. I feel like I’m at the Overlook. We’re going to find some dinner and then relax. Tomorrow we hit the aquarium, which is supposed to be one of the best in the country.
