For our last night in Iceland we stayed in a hotel that had no wheels and a shower that doesn’t require quarters. Van camping is an experience worth having but so are showers without timers. We had two proper meals while we were in Reykjavik (oh wait, I do know how to pronounce this one!) but I’m only going to talk about the first.
Set atop a sex-shop was the most brazen “restaurant” I’ve ever eaten at. They serve only one thing, soup in a bread bowl. You can have the meat soup or the not meat soup served with a pint of their local beer. We sat by a window and watched people double-take the lingerie shots just below us while listening to the waitress repeatedly explain “that’s the menu, it’s all we serve”. The dude next to us had more questions than there were entrees. She has patience I’ll never have.
Bread bowls!
Hallgrimskirkja Church
You can see most of the city from the top of this church. I didn’t get any photos of the inside because I wanted to be respectful (which is to say hide the fact that I’m from America) but the inside was dope. Icelandic design is very spartan and clean. They don’t hide the materials they use and their design has purpose. I really love it. The entire country seems to have an unwritten law that most buildings are white with a red, blue, or green roof. I don’t know if there’s an actual law or if they’ve collectively just embraced a design aesthetic but I LOVE how clean and intentional all their design is.
Downtown Reykjavik
This city has neat buildings and street art. I dig.
We drove hundreds of miles, saw more waterfalls than I could count (literally), and genuinely had a blast. The weather held up for the entire trip and it only took us one night in the van to figure out how to avoid having to get up to pee in the middle of the night. We’re still married after squeezing ourselves into a tiny van for over a week so overall I’d say it was a success. The puppies were very happy to have us home. We missed them so much.
